  • Detection of the Kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect with ACT

The ACT collaboration, in a paper led by the student Nick Hand, has detected the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect through stacking luminous red galaxies (LRGs) found in the Sloan Digitical Sky Survey (SDSS) data release.

By comparing the signal from galaxy pairs at various separations (measured in units of Mpc, or megaparsec), we can directly probe their relative momentum and separate the kinetic SZ effect from its cousin, the thermal SZ effect.

This is the first time the effect has been found in this way - congratulations to Nick for all his hard work!
