  • 200 Young South Africans

I was recently included in a collection of 200 Young South Africans by the Mail and Guardian.

Every year to commemorate Youth Day (a memorial to the Soweto massacre of 1976 - read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soweto_uprising), the Mail and Guardian posts a collection of young South Africans working in the fields of sport, science, arts, technology to name a few.

I'm really honoured to be included in the 2012 collection, you can view my biography here:

  • New post in Statistics, Space, Strings and Stuff

My co-blogger, David Marsh, has put a very interesting blog post on Scalar Fields (of which the recently discovered Higgs boson is one!) Check it out here: http://statsandstrings.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/scalar-fields.html

  • Detection of the Kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect with ACT

The ACT collaboration, in a paper led by the student Nick Hand, has detected the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect through stacking luminous red galaxies (LRGs) found in the Sloan Digitical Sky Survey (SDSS) data release.

By comparing the signal from galaxy pairs at various separations (measured in units of Mpc, or megaparsec), we can directly probe their relative momentum and separate the kinetic SZ effect from its cousin, the thermal SZ effect.

This is the first time the effect has been found in this way - congratulations to Nick for all his hard work!

You can read more here: http://www.futurity.org/science-technology/cosmic-effect-pinpoints-velocity-in-space/

and on the Princeton news page: http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S33/21/69O40/index.xml?section=topstories

Also, for those in Princeton, Rashid Sunyaev is giving the Sackler lecture here tonight, 10th April, McDonnell Hall A02, at 8pm!
